What are some other passions in your life or things that give you purpose and benefit your well-being?
Aside from yoga, one of my dearest passions is being a beekeeper. I don't tend commercial bees nor harvest very much honey. For me, beekeeping is being a steward of the honeybees — I do my best to support them with nectar when they need it, aid their adjustments to the seasons and help control the spread of disease. In return, I receive from the bees lessons, both bitter and sweet, about how nature works and how to slow down and experience life in more detail. Going into a hive box pulls me into the present moment and every colony I've tended has taught me something.
In your words, what is yoga?
Yoga is cultivating a deeper connection to yourself which naturally opens and awakens you to the interconnectedness of all beings.
What teachers have impacted you the most?
I've had a lot of amazing teachers, mentors and colleagues that have helped shaped me into the yoga teacher I am today. The three that stand out as most significant are Laura Allard, Gina Caputo and Sarah Powers. From Laura Allard, who is an Iyengar teacher in Boulder, CO, I've learned that the keys to being a powerful teacher are very simple: practice, study and show-up for your students. We can bury ourselves in all of the other things we "should do" as yoga teachers, but ultimately it is the quality with which we show up for our students that truly matters. Gina Caputo taught me the art of designing yoga sequences. She has impressed upon me to make every pose, transition, cue and intention purposeful. Sarah Power's trainings have given me a lot of knowledge, but what feels most valuable is the transmission of being in the presence of someone who is extraordinarily dedicated to her own practice and to sharing her knowledge with others all while maintaining humility, true compassion and a deeply intuitive nature. Sarah's offerings to the world are immense, but instead of being in the limelight she has chose to stay deeply connected to her family and her spiritual practice. I am very grateful for my teachers and I feel that I am still unfolding wisdom from the many lessons they have taught me.
