In your words, what is yoga?
Yoga is a practice of connecting deeper to who we are and the best version of ourself. It is a ritual, where our breath, body, and mind, come into unity and we can experience presence, freedom, abundance, and love. It is a tool to clear our mind of the junk that can limit us, and tap into the magic that's available to us at all times. It takes practice. While the physical benefits of yoga are profound and real, the benefits toward the mind are greater.
What inspires your teaching?
Encouraging students to enjoy practicing yoga. When the practice shifts from something we feel like we should do to feel better, to something we actually enjoy doing, people are more likely to practice more, and experience the benefits of yoga. I encourage students to enjoy the process, let it feel good in their bodies, and make it work for them, instead of being rigid and intense about doing this correctly. Meditation, breath, enjoying the journey, and being kind to ourselves also influences my teaching. If we approach the practice from a place of dissatisfaction with who we are and our bodies, the practice becomes less enjoyable and has more of an agenda to it. For me, the practice can be enjoyable and a fluid, moving meditation. I try my best to hold space for students to explore their own bodies, minds, and inner landscapes. I make my classes as little about me as possible, and aim to guide students into their own deep experiences.
What teachers have impacted you the most?
Kate Saul, Matt Kapinus, Shiva Rea and Kate Mulheron are yoga teachers that have influenced my practice and approach to teaching the most. The work of Louise Hay, has impacted my life more than any spiritual teacher. Her message of unconditional self-love has had a real impact on my relationship with myself and how much I love my life. Her message shifted my physical yoga practice from one of trying to change myself, to one of accepting my body, enjoying the process, and not taking anything too seriously. Before I found her work, I thought I had to be perfect to be happy. Now I realize, we're never perfect, and that's part of the perfection of being human. Letting go of such intense striving has made me a more relaxed person and opened many doors in my world.
