Meet our March YogaDownload Teacher of the Month, Justin Kaliszewski! Justin is a bold and unique instructor and author who teaches OUTLAW Yoga, a challenging and inspiring practice and revolutionary community. Read on to learn more about this powerful instructor!
When did you start practicing yoga?
I’ve been practicing since 2008.
What has yoga brought to your life?
Yoga has provided me with a platform on which to examine the self. With it has come a new sense of possibility, a methodology with which to reconnect powerfully to integrity, and the ability to constantly reimagine what it means to be me authentically.
Why did you become a yoga instructor?
A girl:)
What impact can a regular yoga practice have on a person's life?
Any impact they want…Yoga encompasses all aspects of life. The wonder is there, should one wish to see it. The change is there, should one wish to be it. It can also make your butt tighter and your abs flatter.
What advice would you give to someone that is just starting yoga?
Don’t take this shit so seriously! Seriously…
What is special about the style of yoga you teach?
I co-founded and teach a practice called OUTLAW Yoga. It is a contemporary practice, designed and offered specifically for this moment in time. It honors tradition but is not bound by it. In order to truly serve us, yoga must constantly evolve to meet the unique needs of the people on this planet here and now. OUTLAW Yoga is that evolution.
What is your favorite yoga posture to teach, and why?
Partner Handstand. Let’s not bullshit ourselves – everyone wants to be able to do handstand, usually to an equal degree as they are terrified to actually practice it. Similarly, humans also have a burning desire to connect to one another coupled with a fear that matches this desire. Partner Handstand pushes our boundaries and horizons at the same time. I teach it in every public class where students have proven present enough to practice it.
Please share some words of wisdom or advice for your yogadownload.com yoga students.
Well, “wisdom” is a big word…then again so is “should”, “supposed’ta”, and “could’a.” Maybe instead of expending so much energy trying to be something we’re not, we can surrender and accept who we are? Love who we are and step fully and fearlessly into who we can be in the space of new possibility afforded by our acceptance of this moment exactly as it is…not how it “should” or “could” be? Also, we’re killing this planet – please, let’s all be nicer to it.
Do you have a favorite quote you'd like to share?
Two of my favorites are:
"Some give the impression that they live because it is a habit they can't shake." ~ Che Guevara
"Let us live so that when we come to die, even the undertaker will be sorry." ~ Mark Twain
What do you like to do "off the mat"?
At heart I’m an artist. I love to create…whether it’s with life itself, creating new opportunities around me as a producer, or with a brush or the written word as a painter and writer. I have a passion for unlocking the wonder that surrounds us, to push the limits of the rules that seem to bind us, and to see just how far I can take this game we call life. I also like to garden and walk in the woods barefoot. Ooh, I’ll be building a tiny house this summer too – very excited about that!
