Krishna Das
Over three days in November 2004, in the renowned Avatar Studios in New York, a choir of 70 and an orchestra of 20, came together to create All One. Featuring Krishna Das (Vocals and Harmonium), Walter Becker (Bass; Co-producer), Def Lepard’s Rick Allen (drums), Ty Burhoe (tabla) and David Nichtern (Guitar; Co-producer and well known composer “Midnight at the Oasis”) the songs were all recorded live in one take with the exception of some additional overdubs added later). The music that flowed was an amalgum of sounds- Violin and Cello with Bansuri Flute- Sarod and Esraj with Piano and Drums- Electric Guitar and Bass with Tabla – Gryphon Guitar with Trumpet and African Percussion… But throughout was the thread of Krishna Das’ deep emotive voice and the voices of the choir and the hypnotic mantric names spun from the living spirit in the room.

Deva Premal
Mantras are rapidly becoming the music of choice for people seeking solace in sound, and Deva Premal, dubbed by one reviewer as "the Enya of mantra," is the voice they're turning to. With close to 400,000 CDs sold worldwide and a buzz of interest from ardent fans ranging from yogis, therapists and alternative health practitioners to Cher and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Deva Premal and her partner Miten have achieved a huge degree of recognition in the blossoming niche world of yoga music. Deva Premal's music is driven by a simple yet elegant vision: "everybody with a voice can sing, and everyone with a breath in their body can experience their divinity...we share with others the healing power of music, and the bliss that it brings." The phenomenon of her groundswell of listeners is living proof that mantras are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. Featuring Deva Premal’s transcendent voice layered in a chorus of lush harmonies, Dakshina is a celebration of the divine, perfect for yoga and relaxation.

Krishna Das
Considered the leading Western proponent of kirtan chanting, Krishna Das shows his stuff on the double-disc Live on Earth. The live setting is where Das really shines, with posse in tow generally singing in the traditional call-and-response fashion. Devotion flows through his husky baritone voice and enthusiasm abounds in the claps of the group. This is how these mantras are meant to be sung, their blessings showering down on every chanter. The explosive "Radhe Shyam" and "Samadhi Sita Ram" open the session with a bang while praising the glory of Govinda and Ram along with their consorts, Radha and Sita. Then, a hush falls and stillness overwhelms when Das and bansuri flutist Steve Gorn offer themselves at the feet of the guru with "Shri Guru Charanam." Going on like this, balancing the ecstatic and the solemn while holding the sacred, Das makes his offerings to all of the major Hindu deities -- Krishna, Hanuman, Kali, Lakshmi, Rama, and Shiva. Particularly enchanting is the ancient hymn "Hanuman Chaleesa." Das sings it to please his own guru, though it was composed in honor of the monkey god Hanuman, noble hero of the great Indian epic Ramayana. One of the most well-known nama sankirtanas in the West repeats the names of Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Das includes two different renditions, "Three Rivers Hare Krishna" and "Mountain Hare Krishna," perhaps signifying his own fondness for the simple beauty of this chant. For the most part, Das sticks with the tried and true Indian instrumentation of harmonium and percussion to create his sound, though he does add a bit of keyboard, cello, and bass to smooth out the edges and truly make it his own. That's fair, and the result is splendid.

Krishna Das
Krishna Das continues his spiritual albums, mixing Indian inflections with a Western base (which comes in the way the songs are constructed, often owing a lot to folk music). Produced by Rick Rubin, this has a wonderful, full sound with some excellent touches, like the emotional cello on "Sita's Prayer." It's a very slow album -- the pieces blooming gradually like flowers -- intended to give its pleasure over time rather than in a single play. While this is obviously a commercial venture, it's also a labor of love and devotion. And make no mistake, it is a truly lovely disc, accessible in its structures (in fact, "Shri Hanuman Chaleesa" would be a rock song if it had a drum kit) and its style, thanks in part to Rubin and his experience. This would be excellent as a meditation aid, but it also transcends that to become a fascinating listening experience throughout. Das sounds like Tom Waits without the voice cracks, which is no bad thing -- his voice is somewhat hypnotic, as befits the music he's making. The underlying sample (a processed voice?) on the last track adds texture to what's really a country song in disguise, altering it completely. A record that's an experience in every possible way.

Baird Hersey and Prana with Krishna Das
** EDITOR'S NOTE: "Gathering In The Light" is Yoga Instructor Sarah Ivanhoe's CD of the month **
THE CD
"Gathering In The Light" is a pairing of two musical forces. Kirtan master Krishna Das, and Baird Hersey and his overtone singing choir Prana unite here to make music that’s whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. With the open hearted sound he is so well know for, Krishna Das sings seven of his most beloved chants over arrangements created by Baird, and sung by Prana.
But, Prana is far more than a human harmonium. The other worldly ensemble sound of Prana's drones, textures and rising harmonies are a perfect setting for both Baird's high arcing overtone melodies and Krishna Das' rich baritone.
The two featured voices, sometimes support one another, and sometimes act as a foil for one another. When placed in the frame of the 8 voice choir, they shine like two spirits in pursuit of the same ethereal goal.
Although this is neither purely a Prana CD or Krishna Das CD, It is like nothing else you will hear. "Gathering In The Light" is innovative, heartfelt, and breath taking.
THE STORY
In October of 2004 Krishna Das attended a release party for PRANA's first CD, "The Eternal Embrace". After Prana had sung, Krishna Das said to Baird, "Let's make a record together or something".
Over the next two year the "or something" was Krishna Das inviting Prana to sing at his larger benefit Kirtans in the New York area. As a part of those evenings KD would join Prana to sing Baird's arrangement of his chant "Puja". The combination of the ethereal sound of overtone singing supporting the rich, open hearted voice of Krishna Das was stunning.
In 2006 Baird and KD decided to record "Puja" for Prana's new CD. The resulting 12 minute piece was so striking, they resolved to record an entire CD together. The result is "Gathering in the Light", Krishna Das singing seven of his most beloved chants over arrangements created by Baird and sung by Prana.
On four pieces percussion was added: Jerry Marotta, (Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello) on hand percussion and drums, South Indian Masters Drummers Subash Chandran, playing ghatam (clay pot), Ganesh Kumar playing kanjira (tunable tambourine), and Arjun Alan Bruggeman on Tabla. The only instrument on the CD other than percussion is the human voice.
The singers of PRANA are; Peter Buettner, Amy Fradon, Kirsti Gholson, Julie Last, Bruce Milner, Julian Lines, Leslie Ritter, Joe Veillette
"Gathering In The Light" is dedicated to Pattabhi Jois and Neem Karoli Baba.
All Chants Composed by Krishna Das., arranged and produced by Baird Hersey

Krishna Das
According to ancient Indian scriptures and saints, the traditional practice of chanting God's name -- be it Krishna, Rama, Ganesh, or another of the numerous deities -- is a tried and true path leading to union with the divine. Kirtan is one of the main forms of this practice, wherein a leader sings out the call and a group echoes with a response. Breath of the Heart is a live recording of Krishna Das in such a setting. Of course, being a westerner, he rounds out the sound with a little more than the customary harmonium and drum of the "motherland," adding Rob McDonald's solid electric bass, Lili Haydn's exquisite though underused violin, and Steve Gorn's mystical bansuri flute, along with various percussion and such. A single kirtan can go on for as long as the leader feels appropriate, although here Krishna Das limits the pieces to not more than 15 minutes or so. That's just enough to get you going before he moves on to the next, which is good for newcomers but perhaps frustrating for true practitioners. For the result is a quick build that doesn't allow you to so much linger in the melody, but rather pulls you along with the rhythm. It's a forgivable consequence when taking his audience into consideration. Nevertheless, with Rick Rubin at the production helm and topnotch musicianship supporting Das' instantly recognizable voice, the combination is a truly enjoyable, and possibly enlightening, offering.

Govindas and Radha are California-based bhakti yogis and kirtan singers. They are a husband and wife team with great love and devotion for the Divine, their Guru, each other, and life itself. This is the essence which is reflected and transmitted through their music. Through the sacred practice of kirtan, repetitiously chanting the names of God/Goddess from ancient India, they guide you on a musical mediation and yogic adventure deep into the essence of Bhakti- the yoga of the Heart, the yoga of Love! Through the grace of their teachers, they have uniquely melded ancient Indian mantras with western melodies, yet still playing traditional Indian instruments. Their music has been described as a trance including mandala, where organic ambience, meditation, art, and prayer merge together as One. Govindas and Radha lead evenings of kirtan, bhakti yoga workshops, and transformative retreats throughout the world.

Jai Uttal
Kirtan is the calling, the crying, the reaching across infinite space – and digging into the heart's deepest well - to touch and be touched by the Divine Presence.
On "Kirtan - The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant", world music pioneer Jai Uttal guides us through the profoundly transformative practice of Kirtan singing the many names of God and Goddess - the heart of devotional, or "Bhakti" Yoga.
Kirtan is one of the gifts given to us by the yogis and seers of ancient India, a key to unlock the vast mystery world within our hearts. By chanting these Sanskrit mantras and melodies without inhibition or self-judgment, we effortlessly enter a space of deep emotional release, inner connectedness and surrender. There are no beginners or experts in this practice. Kirtan is simply prayer, and with the power of our own voices and emotions we create a bridge that spans the vast ocean of consciousness and infinite love.

Call-and-response kirtan accented by lap steel, sitar, horns and gypsy violin. 'Mala' (in Sanskrit, a string of beads, used like a rosary, to facillitate concentration on a mantra) has the same intentions as its predecessor, 'Japa', but the melodies and modes it explores reflect a deeper Eastern influence.

Dave Stringer
Sanskrit mantra chanting and kirtan that marries the mysticism and improvisatory freedom of traditional Indian music with the devotional intensity and live energy of American gospel. Recorded in a series of live-in-the-studio sessions, 'Japa' (a Sanskrit word meaning repetition of a mantra) offers delicious mantras, barefoot grooves, swirling incense and improvisational epiphanies.

Lotus Feet: A Kirtan Revolution was born out of a vision to express the healing power of Indian devotional chanting, known as Kirtan, in a contemporary western musical context. The goal was to both respect the chanting tradition while staying true to the sensibilities of the western singer songwriter idiom.
On Lotus Feet, ancient chants are rich with catchy hooks, evocative melodies, and passionate chord changes. Pop song structures are laced with Sanskrit mantras accented by English lyrics. Acoustic guitars are propelled by world rhythms, hip hop loops, dance grooves and ambient textures. The mantras are the message and the music the messenger. The chants embody a universal language of peace and love while the musical presentation strikes a familiar chord in the western ear and psyche.
Lotus Feet: A Kirtan Revolution offers a gift from the heart of the east on the wings of the west straight to you, the listener, as cosmic sonic nourishment for the Body and Soul.

Amy Barnes
Karen Hogg & Elephant Journal say: Amy Barnes Debut CD a Must Have for Kirtan Listeners!
The popularity of kirtan, the devotional practice of chanting, has grown in recent years. Artists such as Jai Uttal, Wah!, andSnatam Kaur have brought this art form to a wider audience. Nashville native Amy Barnes’ debut CD, Nandini – Daughter of Bliss, is a welcome addition to the collection of any kirtan enthusiast. Barnes, the daughter of a yoga teacher and a Methodist minister, has created a collection of chants that lift the spirit and make the heart sing.
“Radhe Govinda,” the opening track, combines eastern-influenced percussion with dobro, a decidedly Nashville touch. Vocalist Daniel Tucker adds an inspired ecstatic vocal solo to this composition. “Jay Krishna Radhe” features a heavenly performance by guest artist, bansuri flute player Manose. Barnes’ lovely vocals virtually float over this ethereal piece. Another standout is “Sita Ram,” a joyful chant that Barnes composed with her guitar in an open C tuning. Barnes’ mentor, Jai Uttal, plays dotar on this track. The last song, “Shiva Gospel,” combines the traditional gospel tune “Walking in Jerusalem ” with an “ Om namah shivaya” chant. This track really sums up the essence of Amy Barnes. With ease and grace, she artfully mixes eastern and western musical and spiritual influences into one beautiful sound.

Temple Bhajan Band
This CD is the latest creation of The Temple Bhajan band. With very brisk call/response kirtan, ancient mantras, and bhajan sung in traditional style by western singers, it’s a must for every world music enthusiast.
Temple of the Heart is a beautiful composition of modern duets, harmonies and music combined with traditional ancient mantras, chants and bhajans. Most of the songs are sung by Mahalaxmi and Sura. She sings sweet celestial soprano which mixes with Sura’s raspy (old blues singer ) voice, to create a kind of “Beauty and the Beast” scenario. Adwaita plays the mrdunga drum, which slowly brings the chanting to its crescendo again and again.

Eluv
Octaves of Light came about as a divine inspiration and exploration into the healing power of music and sound as a healing modality. During the time I wrote and produced this record, I was going for several Qi Gong teacher training exams deepening my Qi Gong skills. The extended practice and testing sessions were extremely demanding and challenging, physically emotionally and spiritually. It is a work of deep commitment and a sharing of sincere love through this music to all peoples of all nations.
Sound is a universal language, an ancient tool for healing, meditation, spiritual practice and the celebration of life. To truly heal, we must first settle our heart, mind and body. The vibration of sound has the power to restore balance to our harmonic patterns, dissolve blockages, settle us, clear our energy centers, lift our spirits, empower us and heal us.
I invite you to find a comfortable quiet place for your practice. Simply “be”, and feel the vibration of sound wash over your whole being. Allow the sound to permeate deep within you. The vibration of sound within the body is like an internal massage. Each and every pore, cell, organ, muscle, gland, bone, and every part of your whole being will receive this nurturing gift of sound healing energy. As the sound resonates within your whole body, you may experience your energy changing as your vibration begins to shift. This is healing in action. Enjoy…
Your “Journey of Relaxation®” and Healing has just begun…

TriLoka - (Various Artists)
Think of this as a field recording disc, since that's what it is, taken from tapes made by the label heads over the years at an Indian ashram. In other words, it's true chanting for a sacred purpose in a holy place, instead of a disc custom-made in a studio. And that's how it should be. But to judge it as music is both unfair and difficult. The chants are what they are, ways to praise and to achieve a heightened state, and they're not sung by professionals, but by monks and devotees. Aptly, the chants aren't called by name, but by number. They're hypnotic, and certainly draw in the listener, but what you make of them is what you will, nothing more or less.
