Japa

Dave Stringer

Sanskrit mantra chanting and kirtan that marries the mysticism and improvisatory freedom of traditional Indian music with the devotional intensity and live energy of American gospel. Recorded in a series of live-in-the-studio sessions, 'Japa' (a Sanskrit word meaning repetition of a mantra) offers delicious mantras, barefoot grooves, swirling incense and improvisational epiphanies.

Mala

Dave Stringer

Call-and-response kirtan accented by lap steel, sitar, horns and gypsy violin. 'Mala' (in Sanskrit, a string of beads, used like a rosary, to facillitate concentration on a mantra) has the same intentions as its predecessor, 'Japa', but the melodies and modes it explores reflect a deeper Eastern influence.

Brink

Dave Stringer

Dave Stringer: Brink
Reviewed By Derk Richardson in Yoga Journal

Kirtan singer Dave Stringer makes his debut as a folk-rock singer songwriter
with 11 songs that unite his spiritual and secular interests in a surprisingly seamless blend. Following a path parallel to that of Jai Uttal, Stringer moves back and forth between original pop songs performed in English and traditional Sanskrit chants, thus gently obliterating any doubt about these two forms belonging on the same record.

Continuity is provided by ingenious arrangements that incorporate a fluid mix of Eastern and Western acoustic and electric instruments – a combination of various guitars (including dobro and Hawaiian steel), dulcimer, piano, accordian, harmonium, tabla, sarangi, cello, violin, flute, trumpet, drums and a plethora of ethnic percussion and backing vocals.

An accomplished record producer as well (Axiom of Choice, Suzanne Teng),
Stringer has organized the diverse sounds into a sequence of elegant aural rainbows, retaining an Eastern cultural resonance even when fleshing out unabashedly pop melodies.

Divas & Devas

Dave Stringer

Divas & Devas is a CD of East Indian bhajans, sung as male-female duets, in Sanskrit, Hindi and Marathi. The overall feeling is romantic, with the intimate interplay of masculine and feminine gesturing toward the larger relationship of the human and the divine. The arrangements also echo this duality, employing traditional Indian instruments such as tablas, sarangi and santoor, along with Western instruments such as vibes, cello, trumpet, flute, mandolin and lap steel.

The English word diva conveys a number of shades of meaning, some complimentary and some pejorative, ranging from accomplished artist through demanding ego. The origin of the term, however, is the Sanskrit word deva, which means luminous, shining, god, or heavenly one. And it is toward this original meaning that much artistic expression ultimately points. For me then, the title of this CD, ‘Divas and Devas’, refers to the relationship of our limited sense of self to the expansive awareness that we call divine love, as one reaches toward the other.

Leela

Dave Stringer

exclusive to yogadownload.com

Shivo'ham, Shivo'ham was recorded live in Santa Monica, CA. Sanskrit lyrics
are from a text originally entitled 'Nirvanasatkam' by Adi Shankaracharya.
The chorus line "chidananda rupah shivo'ham shivo'ham" means "I am
consciousness and bliss", and the text is a beautiful distillation of the
essence of Advaita Vedanta, or non-dualism.

The band features Miles Shrewsbery on tablas, Mark Gorman on bass, Scott
Schenke on electric guitar, Phil Rodriguez on trumpet, and C.C. White,
Suzanne Sterling and Allie Stringer on harmony vocals, along with Dave
Stringer on harmonium and vocals.
