Ashtanga yoga is practiced for the purification of the body and mind. The Ashtanga approach to yoga is physical, focused, and will create powerful changes in your mind and body. These classes have a straightforward demeanor, and implement a mix of standing and seated poses for a balanced, full body experience. Energetic Ashtanga classes are a mix of holding poses and also at times linking movement with the breath. Ashtanga will challenge you, make you sweat and noticeably make your physical practice more advanced.
Ashtanga emphasizes a combination of vinyasa (breath and movement cohesion), bandhas (energetic locks in the body), and dristi (focus point of the eyes in each pose) in each pose for maximum presence and steadiness.
We've created a 9-day Ashtanga yoga immersion, to give you a clear path to build your practice and understanding of Ashtanga day by day. You'll be introduced to simple concepts in Ashtanga, have classes that focus on certain sections of the Primary Series, and build into the full Ashtanga Primary Series practice to conclude this immersion. Whether you're a seasoned Ashtangi, looking to refine and deepen your practice, a yoga beginner, or someone with yoga experience in other styles, this immersion will leave you stronger and more flexible physically and mentally, and with an Ashtanga practice you can continue on your own.
You'll be guided by 3 expert teachers, giving you different insights, and experience a progression of classes that build off of each other. You'll be prepared for the full 2-hour full primary series audio class, which will help you focus inwards more. It is also recommended to practice Ashtanga 6 days in a row, and rest of the 7th day, so we've included one shortened tutorial on certain subtle details of Asthanga on day 7, to keep you learning and engaged on your rest day.
Ashtanga also has a longer history than most other modern forms of yoga. With roots in India and forms of this style from the early 1900's, Ashtanga was among the first styles to make it's way to the West, and is often considered a modern form of classical Indian yoga.
If you've been feeling stagnant, ready to get more disciplined in your yoga practice, or ready to learn something new, immerse yourself in this 9-day Ashtanga journey.
